Marvel Almost Made Zendaya’s MJ To Be A Superhero

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures once imagined Zendaya’s MJ to be a superhero in the Spider-Man franchise.

Heroes are a dime a dozen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a new one popping up every few months. It looks like Marvel is always looking for opportunities to turn established characters into heroes and the Spider-Man trilogy was no different. Arguably one of the MCU’s most successful trilogies, Spider-Man launched a bevy of new characters, including Zendaya’s Michelle-Jones Watson.

First introduced as a quirky supporting player in Spider-Man: Homecoming, her role was expanded in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Peter developed feelings for her. While Zendaya’s role was far more prominent in the sequel, it looks like it would have been larger than life had original plans gone through.

In an interview for Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Zendaya is once again a supporting player, the star was asked whether she would be interested in portraying a Marvel hero. Zendaya quickly piled on with “No, no, no…” before co-star Tom Holland brought up how there originally were plans on Marvel’s end to turn her into a superhero.

“They were trying for a while, though, remember that?”

Zendaya didn’t go into further details but insisted that Tom Holland should be the one playing a superhero.

“Yeah, but I leave the superhero-ing to this one [points at Holland].”

It’s unknown who Zendaya could have played as the direction the character could take go in a million directions. Perhaps Marvel and Sony wanted a live-action take on Spider-Gwen, except this time under the guise as Spider-MJ? It’s unclear what the future of Zendaya’s MJ is in the Marvel Spider-Man films considering No Way Home ended on a pretty definitive bittersweet note that essentially wrapped up the character’s arc.

Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Marvel’s No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.
