Joan Didion, legendary American writer, dead at 87

Joan Didion had died at the age of 87, her publisher A.A. Knopf has confirmed.

The iconic essayist and novelist — who famously chronicled the 1960s counterculture in her best-selling book “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” — passed away at her Manhattan home Thursday morning due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

She is preceded in death by her later husband, John Gregory Dunne, and her daughter, Quintana Roo.
