Endgame Directors Say That Kevin Feige Wanted To Kill All The Avengers

Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige originally wanted to kill all the original heroes.

Avengers: Endgame was a film that was full of heartbreaking moments. Throughout the film, Black Widow sacrificed herself so Hawkeye could get the Soul Stone and Iron Man sacrificed himself in order to wipe out Thanos and his army. Likewise, Captain America went back in time and opted to live out his days peacefully with Peggy Carter. The ultimate left Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye as the only surviving original Avengers. At one point, however, the body count was set to be much higher.

During an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Anthony and Joe Russo discussed Avengers: Endgame‘s body count. During this conversation, Joe Russo revealed that, at one point, studio head Kevin Feige pitched the idea of killing all of the original Avengers characters:

“Kevin did actually pitch at one point taking all the OGs off the board. We thought it was way too aggressive and that the audience wouldn’t be able to process it, and that in fact picking one or two characters to make sacrifices throughout the movie might give you moments throughout the film where the action could stop and you could have emotional catharsis and then continue with the narrative, and then add more emotional catharsis.”

Anthony Russo then added that, at this phase, they were simply pitching ideas and that there wasn’t even a set script for the film:

“That was also very early days. It wasn’t like there was a script or anything that had that in it.”
