Fund Gives Underserved Children the Chance to Experience Summer Camp
The American Camp Association, New England (ACA New England), has just awarded Hamden’s own YMCA Camp Mount Laurel with ACA New England Campership Funds. Camp Mountain Laurel is one of 64 ACA accredited camps across all six New England states that have received camperships on behalf of specific campers this season.
One hundred and six children will experience the joy of day or overnight camp this summer thanks to the ACA New England Campership Fund. The first-ever Camp Champions Celebration held at Fenway Park last fall raised the funds that will make summer camp experiences possible for more than 100 lucky campers. The funds for each camper will go directly to each of the 64 camps.
Bette Bussel, Executive Director of ACA New England, notes that campers receiving camperships will attend an array of summer camps representing the tremendous variety of camp opportunities available in all six New England states – day and overnight, private and agency, religiously-affiliated and nonsectarian. “At ACA New England, we believe there’s a camp out there for everyone and that every child deserves to have a camp experience. ACA Accredited camps applied for campership funding on behalf of qualified campers who met eligibility guidelines for the federal free and reduced lunch program. The recipients of these camperships are some of New England’s most underserved children.”
Plans for the second Camp Champions Celebration are set for the evening of November 1, at Fenway Park’s State Street Pavilion. More information can be found at www.ACANewEngland.org.
