Fun & Cultural Events for the Entire Family

The public is invited to enjoy the popular film, “Smurfs” (rated PG), in Hamden’s free family movie series on Friday, January 20, at 7pm. Beginning at 6pm, families can participate in a craft project based on the movie and designed by the Eli Whitney Museum. Attendees also will be treated to free popcorn and juice. The movie will be held in the gymnasium of the M.L. Keefe Community Center, located on the corner of Dixwell Avenue and Pine Street (diagonally across from Burger King). Access to the parking lot is through the rear of the center.

The Saturday Afternoon Family Entertainment Series continues on January 21, at 1pm, with a presentation of “Pirate School.” Featured in New York Magazine’s Best of NY: Kids, “Pirate School” is a madcap, one-man comic swashbuckling variety show for the whole family. Veteran entertainer David Engel portrays the bumbling pirate Billy Bones who teaches zany lessons on how to stand, talk, laugh, eat, and sing like a boisterous buccaneer. This program will be held in the handicapped-accessible Thornton Wilder Hall, Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden. Tickets, which are $2 for children, $3 for adults, are available at the door.

On January 22, at 2pm, the Sensational Sunday Performances continue when crooner Raymond Suntino presents “That’s Amore: An Afternoon of Romantic Italian and American Songs.” The performance will be held in the handicapped-accessible Thornton Wilder Hall, Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, students, and children. (Family discounts are available.) Tickets are sold at the door only.
