TotemTom’s Talks

Excitement. That’s the mood that rides the prevailing wind here at the library these days. Of course, the celebration for poet Donald Hall that brought a standing room only crowd to Thornton Wilder Hall a few weeks back certainly gave this excitement considerable momentum, but there’s lots more happening.
First of all, our new carpeting has been installed and it’s gorgeous. What a difference it makes. Everything looks bigger and brighter and, besides, blue has always been a good color for me. Then, in another project aimed not only at making the library look better, but with an eye on improving how the space is used, folks from the Info Department have undertaken a huge weeding of the Reference collection – discarding some items no longer used and allowing others to circulate rather than remain on the shelves. Once that’s done, plans are in the works to revamp both the Reference and magazine areas making more space for both people and materials.
And, for those who are more interested in technology than aesthetics, we’ve got that, too. If you haven’t already heard, our Overdrive e-books are now available for Kindle users – which I know makes a lot of you happy. Or, if you prefer to download audiobooks rather than e-books, we have a whole new audiobook plan called “OneClickdigital.” Instead of the limited number of audiobook downloads available before, OneClickdigital has thousands – yes, thousands of titles: kids’ books, young adult books, mystery, sci-fi, romance, and tons of popular non-fiction titles, sets, and series. Not only that, but it’s easier and quicker to sign up and get started. Just go to www.hamdenlibrary.org and you can find out all about it.
Questions? Comments? Bring ‘em on. I’m always here at TotemTom @hamdenlibrary.org.
