Sexual Assault Arrest - Melvin Wilkes

On July 2nd at approximately 3:00a.m. Hamden Police responded to the area of Dixwell Avenue and Westminster Street on the report of a sexual assault.
Investigation revealed that the victim, a Hamden resident, was asleep inside of a motor vehicle. She awoke to an individual, described as a black male in his 30’s, on top of her. The male subsequently fled on foot towards Dixwell Avenue.
Officer Jason Venditto and his K-9 partner “Titan” immediately conducted a track. They found Melvin Wilkes, hiding in a wooded area, near Colony Street.
That after further investigation by Detective Sean Dolan, a warrant was applied for and approved for Wilkes arrest.
On July 8th, Hamden Officers arrested Wilkes at his Lexington Street home.
Hamden Police arrested:
Melvin Wilkes, 35, of 35 Lexington Street, 1st floor, Hamden. He was charged with Sexual Assault in the 2nd Degree. Wilkes, who was detained at police headquarters on a $100,000 court ordered bond, is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on July 22nd.
